Wednesday, November 30, 2011
ROOM A
9:00 – 10:45
GMOs AND BIOTECHNOLOGIES IN DIFFERENT GEOGRAPHICAL CONTEXTS
Climate change, progressive reduction in farmland, the water crisis, population growth, food security and the quality of food products are all problems that require innovation. Improving land yields is not enough.
Luca Virginio, spokesperson of the Barilla Center for Food and Nutrition. Chair: Camillo Ricordi, Monty P. Jones, Benedikt Haerlin, Vandana Shiva.
ROOM B
9:00 – 10:45
WATER ECONOMY: WATER EMERGENCY
In the near future, greater demand for water and a parallel reduction in water supplies could cause an explosion in the value of water and, as a result, the need to re-evaluate the baseline criteria on which production and commerce policies are evaluated.
Valerio De Molli , spokesperson of the Barilla Center for Food and Nutrition. Chair: Barbara Buchner, Stella Thomas, Luc Gnacadja, Mahmoud Solh.
ROOM A
11:15 – 13:00
GEOAGRICULTURE: TOWARDS GLOBAL AGRICULTURAL POLICIES
Increase in the world population, climate change and growing scarcity of resources: on a global scale, agrifood supply chains have been experiencing considerable difficulty in recent years, and this picture could become even more serious.
Chair: Hans Herren, John M. Reilly, Danielle Nierenberg, Franz Fischler, Monica Frassoni
ROOM B
11:15 – 13:00
FOOD AND NUTRITION: FOOD WASTE AND COMPARISON OF FOOD POLICIES
Across the globe, one-third of the food produced for alimentary purposes – a total of 1.3 billion tons per year – is lost or wasted. This phenomenon must be curbed, not only for its negative impact on food security in poorer countries, but also in order to guarantee sustainable economic development on a global level.
Chair: Umberto Veronesi, Paola Testori-Coggi, Eduardo Missoni, Jonathan Bloom, Andrea Segrè.
